Currently on display in the “Curious Cabinet” at Ejecta Projects is artifact by Jason J Ferguson.

The works created for artifact reflect a deeper investigation into topics that Ferguson has explored throughout his career. Recurring themes in his studio include corporeal existence, the use of monotonous and repetitive action to embody time, and the replication, manipulation, and recontextualization of familiar objects to create uncanny experiences. The small sculptures displayed in the curious cabinet capture poetic moments from the sheltered and repetitive routine of life during a global pandemic. Each fragment was created by taking hundreds of photographs of seemingly mundane compositions in his home. The process became an act of seeing rather than looking; of paying closer attention to the quiet, often overlooked, arrangements of objects in space. The ruptured, incomplete forms highlight the limitations of software and speak of focus, memory, and loss.

Jason J Ferguson is a multi-media artist exploring the poetics and beauty of absurdity. He often uses humor and an absurdist voice to survey challenging topics such as family dynamics, mortality, and religion. Ferguson’s most recent work exploits the capabilities of 3D printing and CNC technology to generate objects of extreme precision. For example, the sculpture entitled Being, nothing more… consists of a CNC milled boulder that occupies the same volume as the artist’s body at age 38 (i.e. 5,616.188 cubic inches). In The Nature of Being (Baby Blue), Ferguson used medical software to extract and 3D print a full-scale replica of his entire skeletal system from MRI, CT, CBCT, and EOS scans of his body. The memento mori was then flocked with baby blue rayon fibers, effectively connecting birth to death. Ferguson’s creative practice is broad and produces artifacts in the form of performances, photographic and video documentation, public interventions, and sculptural objects.

Jason J Ferguson is an installation and performance artist originally from Washington D.C. He received his BFA from Towson University in Baltimore and continued his studies at the University of Delaware where he completed his MFA in 2006. Ferguson’s work has been exhibited internationally including exhibitions in Tokyo, Berlin, São Paulo, and Tirana; as well as nationally in Brooklyn, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Kansas City, and Detroit. Notable venues include the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MoCAD), the Delaware Contemporary, the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, Brooklyn’s BRIC, and the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago. His artwork has been featured in a variety of publications including SCULPTURE magazine, Hyperallergic, SciArt Magazine, Artifizz, the Chicago Art Review, the 3D Additivist Cookbook, and more. Ferguson currently resides in Michigan where he is a Professor in the School of Art & Design at Eastern Michigan University.
